There are more than 24 million pets in Australia. Almost 10 million dogs and cats and for dogs and cats alone they consume a whopping 30 million can and dry meals a week.
The pet food industry is a $4b unregulated industry that mostly sets its own standards and looks after its own compliance and recalls – which is hardly a model for transparency. It’s the old ‘Dracula in charge of the blood bank’ problem and frankly we must do better.
This contrasts dramatically with other countries like the US for instance, where they have an excellent system in that they treat human food and pet food in a very similar way.
I recently instigated a Senate inquiry on this issue, of which the report can be viewed here.
